Step-By-Step Cardigan, Your Way

The Step by Step Cardigan, by Florence Miller, presents a comprehensive introduction to classic raglan cardigan construction, offering an ideal entry point for novice knitters seeking to develop fundamental techniques. This top-down cardigan project emphasizes essential knitting skills while providing a polished, wearable garment upon completion.  You'll be guided through the top-down construction method, incorporating raglan shaping techniques that elegantly accommodate the shoulder and sleeve transitions. The sleeves are constructed in the round, eliminating the need for seaming while creating a refined silhouette. All edges feature professional double knitting finishes that provide clean, durable borders without additional trim work. If you want more of a challenge, Evelyn will walk through optional details that  can incorporate distinctive elements into the basic design framework, allowing for individual expression while maintaining the garment's classic structure.

Prerequisites:
This is a beginner level pattern. Must be able to knit and purl.

Materials
Yarn:

This pattern calls for 700-1400 yards of worsted to aran weight yarn in 1 color. We recommend Malabrigo Rios, Cascade 220, or Berroco Cantata.

Needles:

US 9 (5.5mm) circular needles (32” or 40” lengths) for the stockinette.
US 7 (4.5mm) circular needles (32” or 40” lengths) for the ribbing.
US 6 (4mm) circular needles (40” length) for the double knitting.
If you do not wish to use the magic loop technique for the sleeves, you will also need short circular needles or DPNs in sizes US 7 and US 9.

Notions:
Eight stitch markers, needle to weave in ends, scrap yarn or spare cables to hold stitches. You will also need 4 buttons of approximately a 25mm diameter.

Pattern:
Pattern is available on Ravelry for approximately $8 USD

16 stitches x 21 rows per 4” in stockinette on US 9.
